There was a guy last night, drunk and half gone, standing in a jazz crowd like the room owed him something. He kept drifting forward, inch by inch, until he was right by the band, bumping bodies like boundaries were optional. Then he put his fingers in his mouth and whistled, sharp and animal, crying look at me!!!. The sound cut clean through the sound. People stiffened. The band lost their tether. You could feel it fucking disappear. Jazz asks for listening and presence. He answered with noise.

Every time the band found their footing again he whistled. Like he could not stand the world continuing without him at the center. Watching him, it struck me that some people grow tall and handsome and never have to build an inner life. They are carried by reflection for a while. Then one day the mirrors stop answering. Now he stands alone at a bar, no eyes on him, so he whistles. For a moment the room he is. For a moment he matters. For a moment gravity remembers his name.

I should have told him to stop. Barely 5'1 me should have dragged his easily 6’4 body by the balls out the back and broke one of his legs. I did step between him and the band when he started bumping my brother Tym at the keys, breaking his flow. But inside I kept thinking about the old rooms, not because I want blood or broken bones, but because I miss when spaces knew how to defend themselves. Back then you crossed a line and you felt it immediately. The room would cool. Conversations would die. The music would pause and look at you. Not angry. Just done. You would understand, deep in your chest, that you were out of alignment and there was no arguing with it. The room would choose the music every time. I have only read about these rooms but they feel real to me nonetheless.

That is what hurts. Last night the music was treated like wallpaper. Background sound for someone else’s unraveling. Background sound for an ego starving on itself. Background sound for insecurity dressed up as confidence.

I can make excuses. End of year drinks. Too much whiskey. Cultural bravado. Loneliness with nowhere to land. But wisdom is knowing when explanation stops being useful. If you act like a dick, you are a dick until you act otherwise. Simple law. Old law. Still true. If he comes back next week and whistles, I will speak calmly. Not to dominate. Not to perform. Just to set the line. And if he ignores it, then he will learn the oldest lesson any music ever taught us.

Some things are not yours to interrupt. Respect the music or fuck off.
