The band sits like a circle of prophets meditating, waiting on the call from the gods. Keys answer back first, fluid and full of discovery, leading them to the answer via sonic light. Bass breathes underneath, patient and devotional, a spiritual essence pulling the soul out of their bodies. Guitars sway like gypsies in a field, free and weightless, blessing the ears with melodies from the divine. Drums linger like leaves falling from a bonsai tree, delicate and soft. Then the sax sings, alchemic and serene, a cry shaped like prayer, centring consciousness.

This is not just music. This is not just improv jazz. It is a passage through the matrix of the mind.

If you allow it, truly fucking allow it, this passage grants access beyond the veil of reality itself. Sound becomes a threshold where identity dissolves and the inner realm opens without force. Music acts as a key, turning internally until the self meets itself and starts to wander the divine labyrinth within.

Beyond this point there is no traveller and no destination. Improv jazz becomes meditation in motion, each note ascending and transforming like wind blowing through long grass. You learn impermanence by the solo that never returns the same way twice. You learn non-attachment by melodies that appear, bloom, and release themselves without clinging. The band listens as deeply as it plays, embodying presence, intention, and surrender.

Eventually, time opens a door and says, I never actually existed. Welcome home. Here, you come to find past lives have faces and names. Future selves stare through the cracked mirror of the heavens. The self fades until it becomes voice, pure awareness reawakened. Improvisation reveals the middle way, neither control nor chaos, only response. Sound becomes a riddle the mind cannot solve and never should wish to solve, there is no need, so the heart begins to play instead.

In this state, reality feels layered. Other realms dance closer, not as strangers but as familiars. You understand that awakening is not escape but intimacy with what already is. When the final note begins to dissolve, you sway gently, carrying this newfound wisdom in your entire being, mind, body, and soul. And when the following silence of shared breaths, standing in gratitude, brings you back to your senses, you return revitalised and recharged, like a baby with adult breath. And when the band finally packs up and leaves, everyone leaves without leaving, that passage remaining open as the vibrations still radiate within the rediscovered self.

Music really is just a spiritual experience. Holy fuck. I am writing this because the above has me going, how the fuck did I write such a thing, and I want to keep writing and extending it, but I think it’s done. It’s never done. There’s always more to write. There's always more Improv Jazz to disappear into!
